Get a Cash Bonus With Your Next Checking Account
Updated: Oct 21, 2026
Your next checking account could come with a welcome bonus worth hundreds of dollars. Compare today’s offers, find one that fits how you already bank, and see how a few everyday steps could put extra cash in your account.
What to check before you chase a bonus
No bank hands out $400 for nothing. You’ll almost always need to open a new account, route a certain amount of direct deposits into it within a fixed window, and leave it open long enough for the bank to pay you. The biggest number in an ad usually belongs to the hardest tier to reach, often one with a steeper monthly fee attached.
Start with the fine print on direct deposits, because that’s where most people get tripped up. Banks generally count paychecks, pensions and government benefits. Transfers from your own accounts at other banks, Zelle or Venmo payments and mobile check deposits usually don’t qualify, and a bonus you thought you’d earned can quietly vanish because of it.
Then do the math on what the account costs to keep. A $12 monthly fee you can’t waive eats $144 a year, which turns a $250 bonus into roughly $106 of real value if you hold the account for twelve months. Branch locations, cash deposits, ATM access and overdraft rules matter too, especially if you plan to keep the account long after the bonus posts.
The offers below were available as of October 21, 2026. Promotions change or end without much warning, so confirm the terms on each bank’s application page before you apply.
SoFi Checking and Savings: easiest if your paycheck can move
SoFi pays up to $400, and the mechanics are simple. Once your first eligible direct deposit lands (even $1 starts the clock), SoFi adds up everything eligible that arrives over the next 25 calendar days. Hit $1,000 to $4,999.99 and you get $50. Reach $5,000 or more and it’s $400.
That cliff between tiers is the whole story here. Someone taking home $2,600 twice a month clears $5,000 inside the window without trying, while someone paid $1,800 every two weeks lands at $3,600 and walks away with $50. Check your pay schedule against those 25 days before you switch anything. Your first eligible deposit has to arrive by December 31, 2026, according to SoFi’s current checking offer.
What counts? Recurring payroll, pension and government benefit payments. Checks, bank transfers, peer-to-peer payments and tax refunds don’t. SoFi also doesn’t charge account, service or maintenance fees, so there’s no running cost to weigh against the bonus. It’s one bonus per member, and your account has to be open and in good standing when SoFi pays it.
Huntington: the biggest headline number, if you live in the right state
Huntington advertises up to $600 for new personal checking customers who apply with the promo code by January 15, 2027. Geography comes first, though. The offer is limited to Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
If you’re in one of those states, the $400 Perks Checking tier is one of the most reachable offers on this list. You need just $500 in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days of opening, which a single paycheck covers for most full-time workers. Compare that with SoFi or U.S. Bank, where $400-plus bonuses demand $5,000 to $8,000 in deposits.
The $600 Platinum Perks Checking tier is a different animal. It asks for $25,000 in new money within 90 days, and an extra $200 on top of the $400 tier isn’t much of a reward for parking that kind of cash in a checking account. A high-yield savings account paying 4% would earn about $250 on $25,000 over the same three months.
Fees deserve a close look at both levels. Perks Checking can cost $10 a month unless you meet a waiver condition, and Platinum Perks can run $25 a month without the required relationship balance. Either way, the account must stay open at least 90 days. The full rules are on Huntington’s checking promotions page.
U.S. Bank Smartly Checking: three tiers, short deadline
This one ends November 10, 2026, so it’s the most time-sensitive offer here.
U.S. Bank pays $250, $350 or $450 based on the total of at least two qualifying direct deposits received within 90 days of opening. Deposits of $2,000 to $4,999.99 earn $250, $5,000 to $7,999.99 earn $350, and $8,000 or more earn $450. You’ll also need to enroll in online or mobile banking, open through the promotion page (or have a banker apply the offer), and fund the account with at least $25 within 60 days. The steps are listed on the Smartly Checking offer page.
The 90-day window is generous. A household bringing home $3,000 a month would pass $8,000 before day 90 and collect the top $450, which isn’t possible under SoFi’s 25-day count with the same income. You’re ineligible if you’ve had a U.S. Bank consumer checking account in the past 12 months, and the offer isn’t available everywhere.
After two free statement periods, Smartly Checking charges $12 a month. You can avoid it with an average balance of $1,500 or combined monthly direct deposits of $1,500, among other options. If your paycheck stays put after the bonus, the fee is a non-issue.
PNC Virtual Wallet: for people who still like a branch nearby
PNC’s bonus has two levels. A standard Virtual Wallet pays $100 once $500 in qualifying direct deposits hits the Spend account within 60 days, and Virtual Wallet with Performance Select pays $400 for $5,000 in the same window. Qualifying means regular income like a paycheck, pension or Social Security. Transfers, cash deposits and person-to-person payments are out.
The real draw isn’t the money. It’s the footprint: PNC’s bonus offer page cites more than 2,000 locations and roughly 60,000 PNC and partner ATMs, and Virtual Wallet bundles checking with optional reserve and savings accounts. You can open online or bring a coupon code into a branch.
Be patient. PNC generally credits the reward 60 to 90 days after you’ve met every condition, so a bonus you qualify for in December might not show up until spring. Monthly charges are $7 on the basic Virtual Wallet and $25 on Performance Select unless waived, which is why the $100 tier is often the smarter pick for anyone who can’t comfortably meet the higher account’s waiver rules.
Capital One 360 Checking: $250 with no monthly fee
Capital One keeps it short. Open 360 Checking with the code CHECKING250, receive two qualifying direct deposits of at least $500 each within 75 days, and you earn $250. There’s no monthly maintenance fee, so the bonus is close to pure profit.
The catch is eligibility. Anyone who’s had a 360 Checking, Simply Checking or Total Control Checking account on or after January 1, 2024, is excluded, so recent Capital One customers should skip ahead. Cash depositors should also think twice, because branches and Capital One Cafés exist only in some areas. The current code and timing are on the Capital One 360 Checking offer page.
The parts most bonus roundups skip
Bank bonuses are taxable. Most banks report them as interest income, typically on a Form 1099-INT, so a $400 bonus is really worth about $300 to $350 after federal tax for many households. Set a little aside rather than spending the full amount.
Timing can also cost you. Some banks reverse the bonus or charge an early-closure fee if you shut the account too soon, and Huntington’s terms explicitly require keeping the account open for at least 90 days. Read the closure language before you open anything. And if you’re planning to open several accounts at once, stagger your direct deposit changes so a rent payment doesn’t bounce while money is in transit.
Which offer fits you?
Match the bonus to your paycheck, not the other way around.
If you bring home $5,000 or more within any 25-day stretch, SoFi’s $400 comes with no fees at all, and it’s hard to beat. Steady earners who fall short of that but can hit $8,000 over three months should look hard at U.S. Bank’s $450 tier, provided they open before November 10. Live in one of Huntington’s 21 states? Its $400 tier asks for only $500 in deposits, the lowest bar for that amount anywhere on this list.
People who want a branch down the street will probably be happier at PNC, even at the $100 level. Anyone who just wants a clean $250 and never wants to think about a monthly fee again has Capital One.
Before you apply, write down three things: the deposit target, the deadline and the date you expect the bonus to post. Then save a copy of the offer terms. If the money doesn’t show up when promised, that copy is your leverage.
